July 14 – Class Summary and Homework

Our first half of class was involved reviewing and editing our claims and evidence from last night’s homework. Students worked in pairs to make sure they had a viable claim and that their evidence supported their claims. We then set up writing guides and discussed the structure of a strong claim paragraph.
I was impressive to see that many students had found claims in the reading beyond the one we discussed in class. I am excited to see how students will use evidence to support their claims.
Homework:
- Write your claim paragraph. You can word process this or write it on the paper we started in class. If you need to print at school please make sure this is done before class!!!
- Read and annotate chapter 13 of Hakim Book II – Find out what happens to those Pilgrims!
- Make sure you bring Book I and II to class.
Paragraph Structure: Here is a reminder of the writing guide we set up in class.
- State your claim – “I agree/disagree with Hakim’s claim that…”
- Introduce your evidence. “Hakim states on page _____ that…”
- Commentary – ?How does your evidence support your claim?”
- Introduce your second piece of evidence. “Hakim also writes…”
- Commentary – ?How does your evidence support your claim?
- Repeat steps 4 and 5 one more time.
Remeber you do not need a “therefore” statement and it is ok to use the sentence starters from above!
